The Servian Walls in the garden of Palazzo Montemartini

Every place has a story to tell. The story of Palazzo Montemartini Rome, A Radisson Collection Hotel is intertwined with that of the Servian Walls, the oldest and most imposing fortification in the city of Rome.

Built to protect the city from enemy incursions and attributed to King Servius Tullius, the original walls enclosed approximately 426 hectares with a perimeter of over 11 km, the largest urban area of the time, so much so that some historians called it “the great Rome of the Tarquins”.

The walls we can admire today date back to the 4th century BC. They were built in tuff after the invasion of the Gauls in 390 BC and had 12 gates. During the Augustan age, the walls lost their defensive function and were gradually incorporated into the city's new buildings.

Today, the remains of the Servian Walls are preserved and enhanced within the private garden of Palazzo Montemartini, offering our guests the unique opportunity to admire an authentic fragment of Rome's millennial history in an exclusive setting.

At the entrance to the garden, an interactive map with a QR code allows you to discover the entire route of the ancient Servian Walls.
